Well, today was an interesting day! Firstly it was Charles' birthday, secondly it was a trip to see Robin Hoods Giant Oak and finally it was our International Buffet.
The day started slightly differently this morning as all the boys slept outside under the stars during the night. The temperature was reasonable throughout the night, although there was a heavy dew at dawn. It took a while to wake them , but at least they were all together in the middle of the camp site. Once awake we had a rousing
chorus of "Happy Birthday Charlie".
We then completed the formalities of breakfast, washing up and clearing up the tents, before heading down to the front on the site to catch a bus to Sherwood Forest. The trip took about twenty minutes and took us to the Sherwood Forest Visitors Centre. Here the boys had about two hours to walk around the "Greenwood", visit the shop and
investigate the Major Oak.
This fantastic tree is over 800 year old and is supposed to be the place where Robin Hood hid from the
Sheriff of Nottingham. The tree is very large in girth, but has to be supported by a number of steel poles.
After this it was back on the bus and a return to the camp site fro lunch, followed by activities in Zone 1. This included laser clay shooting and backwoods cooking.
All the boys returned to our site at 5:00 and we began the preparation for our
International Buffet. Throughout the week we have been inviting people around the camp site to this event. Charles printed off about a hundred invitations before we arrived and we managed to distribute about
eighty during the week.
The catering crew have been working hard all day preparing a
wonderful buffet and the boys worked hard to clean the camp site and set it out form the event.
At about 7:00 our guests arrived and we had visitors from
Norway, Sweden and the USA as well as Scouts and Guides from this country. The event was a great success and the boys were a great credit to us and to
the Stotfold Scouts. Well done everyone.
