Silver Cross 2008 - Monday
Monday required an early start so that we could get to "Big Pit" by 10:30. This is a old coal mine which has been opened up for people to go round.

After a short talk, we had to put on helmets and light packs and get ready to decend 90m down the main shaft.

We were not allow to talk cameras down the mine, but this is one of the groups which returned to the surface after a very interesting tour underground.

It is a sobering thought that 150 years ago, all the people on the right side of the photo (those 12 and over) would be working in the pit at the coal face and most of those on the left (six and over) would be working in the pit at other jobs.

After retruning to the surface, it was a trip round the Big Pit Museum and then a ride home for tea.
