Last year’s report ended with ‘Here’s to another full and active
year’. Well, that’s what we have achieved. We have taken part in a
huge amount of activities in the past year. The biggest change has
been the split of the Scout Troop into two nights. We now have a
troop meeting on Mondays and a troop meeting on Tuesdays.
Activities
We have had a very varied range of evening activities. We have been
out and about taking part in Ten Pin Bowling, Skiing,
Mountain Biking, Pitch and Putt, Swimming, Tobogganing, Karting at Super Karts
in Letchworth and Activity World ball park in Hatfield.
Scout Hut activities have included ‘Ready Steady Cook’, Backwoods
Cooking, Iron Man Challenge, Archery, Radio Hike, Fire Works Night, ‘Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire’, Egg Race and Drama Night. This year we ran 4 badge work nights where many of
the Scouts achieved their conservation, guide, writer, photographer and navigator badges.
We ran a charity games night for
boys aged 9 to 15, raising £100 for Children in Need. We also did
fundraising for the Scout section with the bag packing at the Co-Op in Stotfold.
The District Soap Box Derby was held at Stotfold again this year which turned out to be a great
day where we had time trials in the karts as well as games and
activities in the Scout Hut. We also entered in the District Shooting Competition.
We have also taken part in the Stotfold Carnival parade, last year with the theme of Cartoon
Characters and we attended both the Remembrance Day and St Georges Day parades.
Camps / Hikes
We have taken part in a total of 14 camps and hikes in the past
year. The main camp last year was summer camp at Charnwood 2001.
This was a large and excellent international camp in Leistershire
with around 4000 Scouts and Guides offering a huge range of
activities.
We held a camp at Phasels
wood in June. We took part again in the Water Adventure Weekend at
Longridge Scout Campsite where the Scouts got to do rowing, rafting,
kayaking, sailing, canoeing, dragon boat racing, climbing and
assault course.
We ran a November camp again at Boyd field. This is a nice lazy camp, close to home, where
the Scouts can make use of their Scouting knowledge.
We also took part in the District survival camp and the district Pathfinder &
Challenge Hikes as well as having a Christmas hike and camp in
the Christmas holidays.
The Scouts braved Gilwell Park Winter Camp again. This is a great camp held in January and offers the Scouts
lots of activities to do. These included Lazer clay shooting,
computers, Quazer, archery, climbing, abseiling, karting, assault
course, rifle shooting and much more. We were also 1 of 4 troops to
attend a de-briefing
day where 4 of our Scouts were quizzed on how they could improve
the Winter Camp.
The past year has definitely been the year for the Scouts to take
over and run their own camps. We had several patrol camps last year
all based at the Scout hut. The Tuesday troop have organised and run
their own camp at Phasels Wood campsite this May and the Monday
Troop have 2 weekend camps planned for June.
Website
This year we initiated a redesign of our website to offer our Scouts
even more services and facilities outside of our normal meeting.
With the use of a troop website password, our Scouts have access to
services such as message boards, a chat room, and a photo gallery.
Copies of letters, programmes, calendars and badge worksheets can
also be downloaded from the website and printed. Scouts can now be
kept up to date with email alerts and mobile phone sms text message
alerts.
We now hold a virtual Scout Troop meeting in our chat room open to
anyone on the first Thursday of every month, where we have competitions, questions, jokes and general chat.
Lots of reports and photos of events can be found on our website.
All of the activities mentioned in this report have pages on the
website. A copy of this report can be found on our website that can
let you navigate to all of the relevant articles.
Summary
This year we were sad to loose both Paul Major and Ray Baverstock as Scout leaders,
I and all the Scouts that they have led, thank them for their hard work in the many
years they dedicated to the Scout Troop.
I (Charles Kilby) have taken on the role of Scout leader with the
support of a new leader, Nick Peace who has taken on the role of
Assistant Scout Leader. Also thanks to Maureen Brooks, Andrew
Brember and Peter Cheney for their help at evening meetings and
camps. Also thanks to Clare Kilby who manages all of the finances
for the troop and collates the mass of forms that I keep sending
out.
Thanks also to the Scouts who have shown great enthusiasm and
support in all of the activities that we have done. I know that they
enjoy the activities and appreciate the hard work of the leaders…
