In June the Troop took part in
the first pedestrian Carnival Procession. Our theme was ‘Wacky
Racers’ – quite fitting as this was a non-motorised procession
At the end of July we attended
the Abney Jamboree ’99 at Abney Hall, Cheadle Hulme, Manchester.
The off-site activities were lots of fun and very varied.
Some boys went on a trip to Old Trafford, home of Manchester united
Football Club. Others took part in climbing and canoeing.
Swimming was available at the local poll in Cheadle and at a local
Leisure Centre. Five boys climbed Snowdon helping to pull
a weary leader up with them at the same time! Towards the
end of the week the scouts and leaders went on a coach trip to Granada
Studios 9home of Coronation Street and many other TV shows), while
at the same time the ventures went to Alton Towers. Unfortunately
the camp site was very small with not many on site activities which
left the boys with lots of time on their hands. Also some
of the boys and leaders got to know the local hospital well but
I won’t go into details about that!
We also had a two day hike camp
in the summer, planned to help the boys improve their map reading
and navigation skills.
October saw us take part in and
also host the District Challenge & Pathfinder hikes.
In November we once again hosted
the District Soapbox Derby.
In January we attended the annual
Winter Camp at Gilwell Park, just as much mud as ever but many,
many more activities. The best Winter Camp in the five years
that I have been attending.
In March we ran a joint camp at
Boyd Field with a troop from Crowland in Lincolnshire. This
was a great success which we hope to repeat next year with us visiting
Lincolnshire.
12 boys also attended the Survival
Camp at Boyd Field.
Monday night activities have included
route planning, rucsac packing, table tennis, fireworks, archery,
quiz, circuit training, Christmas disco (with the Guides), survival
skills, motor mechanics proficiency badge, radio hike and mini pioneering.
21 scouts attended the Group Millennium
Camp at Buckmore Park, Chatham over the weekend 28th April – 1st May. Although the weather wasn’t on
our side a good time was had by all.
Many thanks to everyone who has
helped us in any way during the year.
