1st Stotfold Chickasaw Beaver Scout Colony
AGM Report 2003
This has been my first full year as Leader of the Chickasaw Beaver
Scout Colony and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope that the
boys have had as much fun as the Leaders!
Throughout the year we have tried to run a varied programme and we
also started the new award programme in September. This is
completely new for Beavers who have not been able to gain activity
badges before. We are still learning what to do and how to do it
but are gradually getting there. A lot of our normal programme
counts towards the various challenge badges.
These are some of the activities that the boys have done during
the past year:-
We visited Baldock Fire Station in May and the boys had great fun
climbing in the fire engines and using the hoses.
In June we took part in Carnival Week, firstly at the Activity
Afternoon at the Memorial Hall where lots of children went home
with cress heads, which we later heard had grown very well. We
then made our Beaver uniforms into soldiers’ uniforms for the
Carnival procession.
We also went to Boyd Field and played wide games and went to
Gilwell on the coach with Cheyenne Beavers and both cub packs for
a Fun Day. An excellent day out.
July saw us tramping through Weston Woods in the rain and we all
got very wet! We also made hats for our Mad Hatters Tea Party
which finished off the summer term. We also attended the District
Scout Group Camp where we had great fun and stayed for the
campfire in the evening.
The start of the new term saw us finding out about ourselves –
Height, weight, fingerprints, shoe size, birthday etc and the
following week we did hand and feet painting where we created some
masterpieces. We had a visit from Hayley from the RSPB and made
bird feeders. We also made clay models, took part in the Harvest
Festival Service at St Mary’s and had an indoor camp fire.
After half term we planted bulbs and pansies in the tubs outside
the Hut and they have looked very pretty this term. We made guys
and then had a firework night. We took part in the wettest
Remembrance Day Parade in our memory!! We had a walk round
Stotfold with questionnaire to complete. Charles kindly came in
for two evenings and took the boys for their IT badge which most
of them got. We took part in the Christmas Tree Festival at St
Mary’s Church and made all our decorations. We finished the term
with a Christmas party.
January saw us playing board games, icing biscuits, Ray did an
obstacle course for us and we did an evening on shoes!
In February the Road Safety Officer visited us; we did a space
evening and then joined with the Cheyenne Beavers for a visit to
the National Space Centre in Leicester which was another excellent
visit.
During March we held a Blue Peter Bring & Buy Sale and raised the
excellent sum of £100 for their Waterworks Appeal, we learnt some
first aid and we made flowers for Mothers’ Day. We also attended
the Mothers’ Day Service at St Mary’s.
April saw us doing an Easter egg hunt, taking part in St George’s
Day Parade which included travelling on the bus and making lots of
noise with the drums. We finished April by going pond dipping and
on to the Riverside Rec.
During the year we were very pleased to welcome Rob Taylor to our
team and he is now an Assistant Beaver Leader known as Snowy Owl.
We have maintained a full colony of 24 boys throughout the year.
Many, many thanks to all the parents who have helped us out in any
way during the past year, especially those who have helped out
week by week at our meetings. We really are grateful.
Here’s to another year of adventure!
Yours in scouting
